Loggerhead turtle on Kamenjak

The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is one of the most widespread species of sea turtles in the world. It inhabits moderate and warm seas and oceans. It feeds on crabs, sponges and jellyfish which it crushes and tears with its powerful jaws similar to break. Loggerhead sea turtles as well as other sea turtles, were massively hunted the past for food or souvenirs and thousands of them were killed as a result of unintended impact by various types of fishing gear.

Turtles caught by trawlers in the winter often die of hypothermia or suffocation after being trapped in a fishing net. In addition mass tourism has had a negative impact on turtle nesting and has endangered the security of ther young. Presence on Kamenjak is occasional.

The fine for killing and harassing a loggerhead sea turtle is HRK 35,000.00.
